Removing Unpleasant Smells from Vehicles

Ozone: Nature's answer to unpleasant odours caused by pets, sports equipment, cigarette smoke, mold, and other smells in your vehicles.

Important Note About Ozone Shock Treatment

The source of any odour must be removed before ozone treatment. If the smell source is not removed (e.g. garbage, mold, dead rodents, etc.), no amount of ozone can eliminate these odours completely. The treatment areas must also be properly cleaned for ozone shock treatment to work properly.

Pet Odours

Pets are an important part of the family, often travelling with us wherever we go. Over time however, the natural oils produced by pets gets into the fabrics of vehicles, often leaving an unpleasant odour. Ozone can attack and safely break down this odour.

Sometimes pets have accidents and urinate in the vehicle. Ozone can safely destroy the urine smell, however it requires an additional step. For any liquid-based smell, a deodorizer must saturate the area where the urine or other liquids soiled the vehicle, then left to dry. After the area is dry, ozone can then be applied, attacking the dried liquid deodorizer and destroying the smell with it.

What a relief! Every day we got in our vehicle, we were overwhelmed by the smells left from smoke and the pets of the previous owners of our van. We did a deep clean, but the smells were deep in the carpets and seats. Combined with the snow and slush brought in by our boots in the winter, the smell was nasty and getting worse! It was pretty embarrassing when offering rides to friends and we often apologized before they even got in the van. Not any more. Calgary Ozone came and completely took care of the smell in just 30 minutes. It's been months now, and the smell hasn't come back. Thanks so much! Blake S., Calgary, Alberta

Hockey Equipment and Gym Bags

In the same way that the oil from pets can work their way into vehicle fabrics, sweat and oils from our bodies can create the same problem. Hockey Moms and Dads often mention how the vehicle smells like a locker room after toting equipment around. And sometimes it's not just the equipment either. Those hot and sweaty athletes can leave odours on seats too. Gym bags and soiled workout clothes can work their magic as well. The odours from each of these sources can be safely and effectively eliminated by ozonation.

Cigarette Smoke

Ozone is very effective in removing cigarette smoke odour. Once treatment is done you will not even know a cigarette ever was lit up in the vehicle. Since the smell of tobacco smoke can be a hindrance to the sale of your vehicle, or at the very least it may lower the amount you will be able to sell your vehicle for, ozonation is a cost-effective solution to this issue. Those attempting to quit smoking can avoid being bothered by the lingering smell of smoke in the vehicle by removing the smell altogether. Ozone doesn't simply cover up unwanted smells, it destroys the smell at the molecular level.

I contacted Scott at Noble Inspections to find out if he could get the 2 years worth of tobacco smoke smell out of my 2008 F350 that I had just bought. Before this, I had tried cleaning and spraying the interior with various chemicals and air fresheners, which only worked temporarily and masked the smell for a very short time. Scott installed his ozone producing equipment inside my truck and let it run for about a half hour with the air conditioner running. The equipment was then switched off and the truck aired out for the rest of the night with a window open about an inch. The next morning, I opened the truck door and could only smell fresh "ozone," the kind of smell that happens during a rain shower. Every hint of tobacco smoke was gone and still is four months later. Anytime someone complains about smoke or other smells they have an issue with, I tell them my story and give them Noble Inspections number. Travis Jerrom, Calgary, Alberta

Mold and Other Odour Sources

Running air conditioning on hot days produces moisture in the ventilation ducts and hoses of a vehicle. In addition to moisture, a vehicle's ventilation system is a perfect place for dust (an organic substance), to be trapped. This creates the ideal environment for mold to grow, and then circulate through the vehicle every time the ventilation fan is turned on. Ozone can kill mold growing on the surface leaving your vehicle not only smelling fresh, but also making the air safe and healthy to breathe.

Moisture saturated vehicle carpets containing dirt and other organic substances (e.g. food, garbage, hair, skin cells and pet oils and fur) can create very unpleasant odours. The heat on a hot summer day will amplify these smells. These smells will get right into plastic, rug, fabric, and upolstry, often leading people to use deodorizers to cover up the smells. Ozonation however, will not cover up but safely destroy most organic based smells.

We had the 'unthinkable' happen... a 4L jug of milk was inadvertently left in our car for 4 days in 30°C weather. The odor was terrible! Even after shampooing the carpets, cleaning every surface and using bottles of Febreeze, the smell was still there. Scott came to our rescue with his ozone machine and we will be forever grateful. The odor is completely gone! Thanks Scott! R & J Stewart

Did you know?

Mold grows extremely well in warm, dark, and damp places, requiring only three conditions to grow:

  • Moisture
  • An organic food source (e.g. dust)
  • The right humidity (greater than 60%)

Helpful Hint:

Once mold is growing in the vent ducts of the vehicle in can be difficult to remove. The best way to minimize any mold growth is to operate your air conditioner properly. Here's how:

Turn off your air conditioning 5 to 10 minutes before you get to your destination. This will allow the vent ducts and connecting hoses to dry out by warming up the ducts. Warm ducts will stop producing condensation and are dried out with the fresh air running through them.
